Planting easy to manage orchards

Writer's picture: John.d.hancox@btinternet.comJohn.d.hancox@btinternet.com

This is a newly planted orchard planted by Scottish Fruit trees for a customer in Ayrshire. We planted about 80 eating and cooking apple, plums, damsons and pears. The selection was based on hardy varieties that suit the local conditions. The trees were planted using container grown trees.

The idea is to keep the trees at a manageable height with summer pruning and mulching helps to manage weeds and grass competition. We have had plenty rain this summer - which has helped the trees to thrive and get established. Using ladders in orchards now is not easy and safety is an important consideration. Therefore being able to prune and pick the fruit from the ground makes fruit growing much easier and safer.

We offer a design and planting service which takes into account easy of management. Contact john@scottishfruittrees.com for details.
